Clayton Park Junior High

November 1st Update

Good Evening Clayton Park Junior High,

Seeking Basketball Coaches

Clayton Park Junior High School is looking to recruit community volunteers to coach both of our basketball teams. The process to volunteer in schools can sometimes be a challenging procedure. Volunteering guidelines are detailed below with links to the Child Abuse Registry and Vulnerable Sectors Check. The process for obtaining each of these documents varies, as does the time to receive them back.

The basketball season begins on January 8th and goes until March 1st. Tryouts would be held in the range of December 11th-15th and tryouts will be supported by CPJH Staff. Games are played at 4pm and practices would be held either before the school day (8-9am), lunch hour (12:20 – 1:10pm) or afterschool (3:20 – 4:20).

If you are interested in coaching our male/male-identifying or female/ female-identifying basketball teams, please contact Ms. Gee our Vice Principal, egee@hrce.ca, or at 902-457-8930. Deadline to submit expression of interest is November 20th. Extracurricular Activity Supervision Policy (effective September 2019) - link

HRCE Volunteering Requirements

We recognize our responsibility to ensure that all students attending our schools are protected by taking reasonable precautions to screen volunteers who may be working with students without direct supervision of staff. In accordance with Nova Scotia's Provincial Volunteer Background Check Policy, prior to volunteering with the Halifax Regional Centre for Education, all volunteers will provide:

  1. A completed Child Abuse Register - Request for Search Form, which can be found here
  2. A certified and true copy of a Criminal Records Check with Vulnerable Sector Check available here, from your local Police or RCMP detachment or through online organizations endorsed by Nova Scotia law enforcement agencies

Please note: the Child Abuse Register Search and Criminal Records Check must be issued in the three months preceding volunteering and updated every three years.

Inclement weather

Did you know? HRCE takes great care when making the decision to alter the regular operations of schools and school buses in the event of severe or inclement weather.

It is HRCE’s goal to communicate any changes to the regular operations of schools and/or buses as close to 6:00 a.m. as possible. A 6:00 a.m. announcement could be:

  • · All schools are delayed in opening by two hours and bus pickups are delayed by two hours; or
  • · All schools are open, but some or all buses are not operating for the day; or
  • · Some schools (either individually or by family) are closed for the day; or
  • · All schools are closed for the day.

Delayed opening, school would be delayed by two hours. At Clayton Park, this means school would start at 11:20 am. If school buses are operating, the expectation will be that students are picked up two hours later than their regularly assigned time pending any weather-related delays. Our lunch and dismissal times will remain at their regularly scheduled times.

If weather deteriorates, or is forecasted to worsen throughout the morning, an 11:00 a.m. announcement could be:

  • · Bused students will be picked up two hours earlier than their regular dismissal time; and
  • · Walking students will be dismissed at their regularly scheduled lunch hour.

How will I find out?

  • · By email to the addresses in PowerSchool
  • · By text message, if you have opted-in. If you aren’t sure if you have opted-in, text Y to the following number: 978338 · On our website www.hrce.ca

· On X (formerly Twitter) at Twitter.com/HRCE_NS · On Instagram at www.instagram.com/hrce_ns/

It’s important to always have a plan in place for childcare in the event of any cancellation. For more information on how HRCE manages during inclement weather, visit hrce.ca/weather.

Dressing for the Weather

Now that the colder weather is upon us, please remind your child to dress appropriately for the weather. Unless temperatures are very cold, students will be outside during lunch for 25 minutes.

Remembrance Day & Indigenous Veterans Day

On November 8, we honour Indigenous Veterans who have served in missions in times of war and peace. While not often enough acknowledged, the military service of First Nations, Inuit and Métis in Canada has deep roots.

The Remembrance Day Observance at Clayton Park will be Thursday, November 10.

On November 11, we pause and reflect on the sacrifice of our veterans, past and present. Lest we forget.

Transgender Awareness Week

Observed annually from November 13-19, Transgender Awareness Week provides an opportunity to raise awareness and acknowledge the positive contributions made daily by members of the transgender community. The week concludes with Transgender Day of Remembrance on November 20, a day on which we memorialize victims of transphobic violence.

Be an ally

An ally is someone who actively and consistently supports, stands with and advocates for the 2SLGBTQIA+ communities. The best way to be an ally is to listen with an open mind. It is our responsibility to treat all people with dignity and kindness.

CPJH Dance

CPJH will be hosting its first dance on Thursday November 16th from 6:30- 8:00 pm. This is open to all students in grades 6-8. Tickets will be on sale in both the modular and the main building on Thursday Nov 9, Friday Nov 10, Monday Nov 13 and Tuesday Nov 14th at the beginning of lunch, at a cost of $5. Tickets will not be sold at the door.

This is a dance for CPJH students only, no guests will be permitted.

A canteen will be available for purchase during the dance.

Students should be dropped off no earlier than 6:25 pm. Doors will open at 6:30. We ask that if you are picking up students that you arrive at 8:30pm. If students are walking home, they should be travelling in pairs or groups.
