Reporting Student Absences

Please read the attached message regarding reporting a student absent.

PowerSchool

All parents and students are encouraged to check PowerSchool on a regular basis.  PowerSchool is updated daily with student attendance.  In addition, parents and students can check on students’ assignments and assessments.  Anything that is blue in PowerSchool provides additional information.  Teachers have updated students’ assignments and assessments in PowerSchool as of Monday, October 24th.  Please reach out to your student’s teacher if you have further questions.

YouTube Access

Last fall (2021) Google Workspace for Education implemented new age-based settings for all Google apps. As a result of this change, many students were unable to access YouTube within their GNSPES accounts, unless they were accessing the videos through a link shared by their teacher. Last year, schools shared communication with families who had students grades 7-12 to update them about this change. At that time HRCE decided to make YouTube available to Grade 7 to 12 students. Opportunity was provided for parents to have this access removed for their child(ren), if they chose to do so.

If parental/guardian consent was/is not granted, students will still be able to view videos shared by their teacher in google Classroom and Slides etc.

Students with parental consent to access YouTube via GNSPES at school means students can search for and view videos that have been deemed appropriate for 13+. Students cannot create channels or upload or comment on videos.

Parents / guardians who permitted their child(ren) to have access to YouTube last year will have those settings automatically carried over into this year unless parents contact the school for access to be removed. Likewise, any parents/ guardians who asked for their child(ren) to not have YouTube access last year, these students will continue to not have this access this year.

‘Opt - Out’ consent information -  Any student’s parent / guardian who does not want the student to have this access to YouTube to support their learning  is asked to contact Mrs. Canavan, Principal, tcanavan@hrce.ca. Additionally, any parent who did not want their child(ren) to have access to last year and are now wishing for them to have access for the 2022-2023 school year, should contact Mrs. Canavan, Principal, tcanavan@hrce.ca.  Families are asked to contact Mrs. Canavan by November 4th.

• November 21st  – Assessment and Evaluation Day (no classes elementary & junior high)
• December 1st  – Professional Development Day (AM) (no classes)
•                                 Parent Teacher Interviews 1-3pm & 6-8pm (no classes)
• December 2nd – Professional Development Day (no classes)
• December 21st – January 2nd – Holiday Break (no classes)
